"Reverse painting on glass": lecture and family workshop

16 September, 12:00 - 14:00

The Museum of Russian impressionism introduces visitors to western European folk religious reverse glass painting. Masterworks executed in this unusual technique (the final image should be viewed through the glass) occupy a special place in Vladimir Spivakov's private art collection that provided the basis for our latest "Avocations" exposition.

Our class dedicated to reverse painting on glass will consist of a lecture and a workshop. During the lecture participants of the class will learn the history of reverse glass painting. It had come into being in the late antiquity and was at its height in the period of Renaissance. By the 19th century it became one of the favorites forms of the folk arts. In the early 20th century it was almost forgotten, but German expressionists have brought it back to life.

The lecture will be given by Oksana Lopatina, the Old Masters Department specialist, curator of glass and ceramics at The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. After learning the theory the participants of the class will create their own reverse glass paintings.

The entrance ticket is included in the price of the class.
