Virgin Mary

The twenty-one reverse paintings on glass in this section of the exhibition provide a unique opportunity to examine a fascinating form of western European traditional painting. All of the works were made in the nineteenth century and relate to folk art both in terms of their naive style and simple technique.

Their bright colour palette and decorative nature gives these images an uplifting air typical of popular celebrations, market days and street theatre.
